TenderTree Rolls Into Beta To Help You Find Reliable Senior Caregivers

tendertreeIt’s always refreshing when a startup tackles a real-world problem instead of building another photo-sharing/local reviews/social calendar service. Case in point: TenderTree, a company that’s trying to improve the way people find reliable care for their aging family members, and then pay them for their work. A recent participant in the latest 500 Startups batch with less than a million in funding, TenderTree is launching now into its beta, targeting the San Francisco Bay area to start.

The men then take your questions, and it’s an Engadget Podcast, the Grey Poupon of the technology podcasting community.

Nokia nabs 808 PureView space shot of this big, blue 41-megapixel marble

Image

We’ve seen plenty of shots of the Nokia 808 PureView in action, but they’ve all been hampered by boring old terrestrial bounds. Thankfully, a team attached the handset to a giant balloon for a little more perspective. The photo is at the end of the six and half minute video after the break, but thankfully there are a lot of lovely shots of Iceland accompanying atmospheric music to keep you busy in the meantime.

[Thanks, Chad]

Sony Xperia GX and SX reportedly coming to Japan in July and August

Android Central

Sony announced the Xperia GX and Xperia SX just a couple of days ago with an estimated "summer" launch window for both devices. But today leaked documentation obtained by XperiaBlog offers a little more granular detail. According to info obtained by the site, the Xperia GX will arrive in July, with the Xperia SX following shortly after in August. (This roughly matches a leaked Sony roadmap which appeared back in January.)

The documents also reveal plans for NTT Docomo branding atop the Xperia GX's 4.6-inch screen, as well as size and weight info. Apparently the device will weigh 127 grams and measure 131mm x 69mm x 10.2mm. As it features the same arched back design as the Xperia Arc, the thinnest point of the GX measures 8.6mm, same as the Galaxy S III. Apparently it'll also ship with a 1700mAh battery, which should hopefully be enough to power its 1.5GHz dual-core CPU and 720p Sony Reality Display. As we reported earlier in the week, other specs include a 13MP rear camera with 1080p video recording, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage.

And in Xperia SX news, renders included in this latest leak reveal that the phone will apparently ship in pink and orange, in addition to the already-revealed black and white flavors.

Unfortunately there's no news on when (or if) either device will see an international release. Sony tells us that these phones are "designed specifically for the Japanese market," adding "we have not made any announcements with regards to possible availability in other markets."

If you like poring through Japanese technical documents, you'll find more info from today's leak over at the source link.

Ryan Gosling’s ‘Gangster Squad’ Trailer: Five Key Scenes

Gosling reunites with Emma Stone in the star-studded, Tommy gun-packed clip.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

One of the fall’s most anticipated releases, “Gangster Squad,” packs an all-star cast, old-school vibe and a bunch of Tommy guns. Needless to say, we’re interested.

The film from “Zombieland” director Ruben Fleischer just got its first trailer, so we’ve broken it down for you into these five keys scenes.

“Every kingdom comes up bloody”
A centerpiece of the trailer, it’s hard to miss Sean Penn even under all of that makeup. In “Gangster Squad,” Penn plays Mickey Cohen, an east coast gangster who has come to Los Angeles to become “a god.” Cohen is the ultimate evil that the Gangster Squad is going to stop at nothing to put out for good. The trailer gives lots of screen time to Penn, and when you also consider the prosthetics on his face, it’s not hard to imagine that Warner Bros. would make a Best Supporting Actor push for him come Oscar season.

Mackie, Gosling and Peña Take Aim
Cohen is not going to have an easy time taking over L.A. with a team like this after him. Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Anthony Mackie, Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Peña, and Robert “T-1000″ Patrick make up not only the illustrious Gangster Squad, but a star-studded roster that rivals any major release this year. Between this and “Men In Black III,” Brolin is set to have his biggest year since 2007, when he stormed back into the spotlight and starred in every other movie.

Crazy, Gangster, Love
Gosling and Emma Stone created sparks when they starred as an on-screen couple in last year’s “,” and here they reunited to keep the passion going, albeit 60 years earlier. Stone plays Grace Faraday, the untouchable girl belonging to Mickey Cohen. Untouchable until Gosling shows up, that is. They only have a few moments together in the trailer, but honestly, they were pretty hot.

Let’s All Go to the Movies
It’s already immensely clear from the trailer that “Gangster Squad” is a movie that loves movies. This is a L.A. film noir in the tradition of Hammett, Chandler and movies with Humphrey Bogart. All of the tropes are there: the Tommy guns, the fedoras. But at the same time, “Gangster Squad” wants to take a new angle on the genre, and we may be seeing some symbolism for that, when the firing squad opens up on a movie theater through the screen.

The Bottom Line
Listen: If your trailer includes a shot of Ryan Gosling casually catching a shotgun and then pointing said shotgun at a bad guy, while uttering the line, “Not anymore,” we’re going to see your movie. End of story.

Are you planning on seeing “Gangster Squad”? Let us know in the comments!

That Which We Call An Ultrabook By Any Other Name Would Smell As Sleek

Screen Shot 2012-05-10 at 8.58.35 AMYesterday, to much fanfare and resolute sentiment, HP announced a return to what made it a great company to begin with: poorly-named and generic computing devices tarted up to take on Dell. This year it’s the HP Envy SpectreXT, a thin and light that can’t officially be called an Ultrabook because that’s an Intel marketing term and these things sometimes run on AMD chips. I think it’s important to point out the clear problems in the above statement: because Intel officially controls the “ultrabook” spec – including the pricing, screen size, speed, and physical size – manufacturers must toe the line when it comes to what can and cannot be sold under that rubric. In short, Intel’s own standards have so long stymied the OEM’s ability to innovate that, in the end, we’re all essentially buying Intel PCs no matter the brand or maker.
